Why is wool the best Textile to use for clothing?

Here are some of the reasons why wool is the best textile to use for clothing
               * It is an excellent insulator keeping you cool in summer, warm in winter
               * It can be recycled and reused
               *It is mould and mildew resistant
               *It isn a fire retardant
               *It is breatheable
               *It is non allergenic
               *It is soft on your skin making it comfortable to wear
               *It lasts along time
               *It is wrinkle resistant
               *It is natural making it better for the environment
               *It is biodegradable
               *It doesn't soil easily
               *It is durable
               *It absorbs dyes deeply causing them to fade less
               *It Keeps you warm when wet
               *It is a natural and renewable resource
               *It can be made into a range of garments

Synthetic fabrics have become more common in pieces of clothing in the past 30 years   because of our advances in Technology. We are able to make these garments much cheaper than woollen garments therfore the demand is higher for synthetic fibres.

Synthetic fabrics although they are cheap and readily available they don't have the high quality that is associated with wool. Some of the reasons why they arent consired the best fabric for clothing include

              *It is highly flammable and will stick to your skin if it catches on fire
              * It doesnt last for a long time
              *It doesnt allow your skin to breathe
              *It will fade and lose its shape
              *It isnt a regulator of temperature
              *It will stain easily
              *It isnt natural it is manmade

Therefore the qualities of wool make it an excellent choice for clothing in all temperatures and in many styles of vlothing.

Our Archie is slowly transforming from a blank canvas  into our own individual piece of art titled "Wrapped in Yarn". We have started decoupaging his head with wrappers from pure wool, interesting labels and pictures. Our title  that we are basing our Artwork is"Wrapped in Yarn"this is where we are looking at all the different forms of wool from raw, dyed, spun yarn to the fabric stage and how and where we use it eg knitting etc. As you can see our Archie is slowly changing f you look closely you will see that there are some  very interesting wool samples.

"There will be significant costs to the Australian economy and the welfare of all Australians if these are allowed to degrade."

What is Natural Resource Management?
This term refers to the management of land, water, soil, plants and animals with a focus on how management effects the quality of life both in the present and for future generations.

Give some examples of Natural Resource Management?

The Australian Government is investing $2 billion to achieve a real and
measurable difference to Australia’s environment. Caring for our Country funds
projects across the country to achieve national targets - projects that improve
biodiversity and sustainable farm practices.
*    Australia's National Reserve  System is a nation-wide network of  reserves
      especially set up to protect Australia's unique natural environment for
      current and future generations.
*    Australia's unique biodiversity underpins the functioning of our natural and
      productive landscapes, but faces threats from habitat destruction, invasive
      species, pollution and climate change
*    Australia's coasts and critical aquatic habitats are significant
      environmental assets which are also fundamentally important to the Australian
      lifestyle and economy
*    Over sixty per  cent of Australia's  landscapes are privately owned or leased
      for agricultural production

Why do you think it is important to get it right?
If we don't focus on these environmental issues affecting Australia's Natural Resources we will not have them for future generations.

Think about some of the consequences if we don't manage these resources properly?
There will be no:
*    food
*    textiles for clothing
*    land for farming
*    clean water for drinking and crops

This was to be the most sought after event of the year, "The Gwynneville PS Wool Innovation Fashion Show" which was held  on Wednesday September, 2013. It had been promoted nationwide with top models to be showcased on the catwalk. This fashion show would be a variety of Wool Products such a blankets, jumpers, scarves, dresses, skirts, beanies gloves, suits and pants.

Guests enjoyed the goody bags that we received on arrival,inside were samples of
wool and woollen products. We were all waiting to see who the big name models  were going to be. It was really a day all about the models and their product.

How professional the models from Year 6 were strutting their stuff down the catwalk like they were seasoned campers. The audience gazed, clapped and cheered. All of the models wore different styles of clothing which looked fantastic.

Halfway through the show we finally got to see the much anticipated arrival of the to international models. The first was Mrs Eshman who had travelled all the way from Paris to model a stunning, tight fit, black woollen dress. The second, the most famous of the two Kenny Sutcliff the male model from Mudgee who had arrived straight from the catwalks of London, modelling a magnificent, black woollen suit. The crowd could not take their eyes off the two seasoned models.

All the garments showcased were, in fact, entirely made from wool we couldn't believe how versatile wool is, as we are so use to seeing it as big and chunky. There were so many different styles and textures of clothing.

This Fashion Show most certainly did live up to all expectations with top class models and clothes to die for. There were many orders taken on the day for showcased garments.

We are all hoping that we will be invited to next seasons Fashion Event as we can't wait to see what woollen garments will be on parade next winter

" Developing stories about the future helps us to identify what we understand or don't understand, challenge our preconceptions and assumptions, and gives us insights into information we need to get. This helps us deal better with
wicked problems."

We hear the word sustainability almost every day. But what does it mean!

Look around you, Sustainability is the people and the land working together like links of a chain ensuring our resources are maintained for future generations.

Australian Farmers make up less than 1% of our population. With todays population approximately 22.68 million. How can they effectively clothe our community if they don't employ sustainable methods of farming?

Wool is a versatile fabric which has many uses. It can be used for gloves, beanies, scarves, socks, dresses, pants, shirts, jackets, skirts and jumpers.

In order to make woollen garments it used to be very time consuming, but with advances in technology we have been able to make items of clothing quicker to supply an ever increasing population.

NSW  has a population of 7.29 million with a current sheep flock of 26 180 000 producing about 140 000 tonnes of wool per year. Throughout NSW we have a large sheep population to supply wool for clothing.

To sustainably clothe NSW we would need to look at
             * How many wool farmers there are in NSW
             * How many sheep per flock
             * Expenses of Farming - shearing, wool handlers,wool presses etc
             * Current wool prices - 1128c / kg as of Sept 2013
             * Garments produced
             * Care for the environment - water use
             * Demands of the population
             * Demands of our economy
             * A greater selection of products
             * Recycling products - buy second hand
             * Educating people about wool and its properties

If we want to be truly sustainable we need to understand the impact of our lives and the things we need to survive have on the environment remembering that sheep, the land, food, the farmers and the community all need to support each other in order to support sustainability.
